I don't consider myself an authority on the subject, but in my experince mild steel saws, files and peins as well as any of the other metals you mentioned and is the most accessable and cheapest.

>you don't want material with carbon in it so it work hardens. cold rolled steel works well brass will work for the sides too. but I think I had a few infill planes made from precision ground 0-1 but I cant' remember for sure.

>I used cold rolled steel for the sole and brass for the sides on my first attempt at double dovetails, and they both worked pretty well. The main problem that I had with the cold rolled steel that I used is that it wasn't very flat and took quite a bit of work to get flat. That, and I left way too much steel sticking out of the sides, and it took a lot of filing to get the sides flat.

Speaking of gunmetal... for anyone that knows, is gunmetal actually the name of the metal, or is it just a specific type of metal that's used in guns? I've tried finding gunmetal, but I can't seem to find any.
