Miter jack, eBay oddities, checkering, etc. *LINK*

>At this price it's surely no gloat, but I couldn't resist this miter jack on the bay this week. Yes, I coulda made my own with scraps for free, but a 120+-year-old one, from the time before Hammacher met Schlemmer, held an irresistible appeal for me (link below).
Also, a random hour spent on eBay always turns up some humor, and some oddities.
I was amused by this description - a 'chisel to be stored in a wooden block.'

Some of these bidders must have recognized this bizarre-looking cast iron plane, but I don't - whatizit?

I dunno if this is some kind of uber-Franken-plane or just something I don't recognize, but the pictures of the sole (scroll all the way down) make it a mystery to me how this thing coulda been used, though it looks like it was modified specifically to take this blade and wedge.

Finally, last week I found and bought a couple of checkering cutters (as used for gunstocks). Anyone know of a site you could steer me to, that might give me some hints on using these? I'm not gonna start doing gun stocks, but I think I might try some checkering on a 'touch' surface of a piece of furniture, as a detail.
