OT - web weirdness

>When I connect direct to my DSL modem, all is well. But, when I connect (by Ethernet cable) through the router, I can open some pages, but not others (e.g., I can open this Hand Tools page, but can't post ... can open ebay's main page, but not My eBay page. Email is fine either way.) I've reset the router and modem many times, and the pages that will or will not open are consistent across time and browsers (i.e., Firefox behaves the same as IE)

This is driving me nuts - any suggestions? Is this just an early sign of a dying (5 month old) router? If so, it'll be my 3d router this year, any suggestions on a reliable brand for the 4th one?

I have been woodworking for about 25 years now, and would consider myself an enthusiastic amateur. My claim to fame (or infamy) has always been fixing stuff. I spent time in the Air Force in the 60's then went to work as an electronic technician for civil service. I finally got my EE, and being fed up with the civil service nonsense, took a job with Ford Motor Company until I went with the split to Visteon last year. I got interested in music and started playing in a bluegrass band. I wanted a new guitar, and that kind of led me into woodworking. I bought some books, a few tools, and built a guitar. Luckily, I didn't know any better than to try that as a first ever project. I still play it when I get a chance, so it must not be too bad if it can live for over 20 years. After a stint in Mexico for my job, I moved into a new house and built a small shop. Since then I have been collecting tools and skills, probably more of the former than the latter ;-). Finding this site has done more for my skills and enjoyment than anything else. I have learned a lot and really enjoy the friendships that I have made here. I have been married to LOML (Lori) for 32 years now and have 6 kids. When they are all gone, I want to get a 1 bedroom house (so there is not room for them to move back in) and at least a 6 car heated/air conditioned garage for a shop. (Dream on...)

That is odd. I can not see why the router would affect some pages, and not others.

To answer your second question, I have a Linksys wireless + ethernet router (and the wireless card for my laptop), and have had no problems since installation a year and a half ago.

I checked the router settings (I had to re-enter all of them, a router reset wipes 'em clean), and they look fine. Besides, I would think a bad setting would keep me off entirely, not just some pages. And sadly no, it's not just today, it's been slowly getting worse over the last week or so.

Thanks also for the recommendation - router #2 this year was a Linksys. Sigh ... Guess I'll just buy another new router and see if that solves it. I am to the point, though, that I'd pay double for one that was bulletproof and would last.

BTW, are you planning to go to the Guild meeting next week (12/13)? Wanna ride up together? I think I'll bring the Conoid chair for Show'n'Tell. Are you gonna do the Marc Adams seminar next month? I notice it seems easier getting these 'name' folks from the Frozen North to come do seminars in Lauderdale in January ...
