Chad Boehlke

>I have just made and put on the web my new site. The old site was to amaturest looking. This one is better for it has seperate pages for the dif. bench planes, moulding planes, and other tools. Also a web link page and a order page. The ONLY glich I have are the photos, I made them to big. It dose not load very welll on my windows 95, but did well on windows 2000 or that higher versern. I am not good with new tech. but better with old tech i.e. hand tools (no computer required) SEE what you think and always open to other ideas. Thank you. p.s. I think this is the best messageboard on the web, people talk about tools, I love it. Chad in the middle of Nebraska. (sorry about spelling, we need spell check on this site)

>sure, it's a commercial site and the guy should've put a notice in the subject line to that effect, but it is very obvious that it wasn't done in a malicious way and it is relevant to this message board.

Here's the link for those that didn't catch it from his email address.

It's spelled "grammar" If I were you, I wouldn't give advice about spelling.

Good luck.

100+ patterns is most impressive.

Best wishes and let me know if I can help with anything.

>Enjoyed looking at your web page and wish you luck.... I do have to disagree when you say that vintage molding planes being sold on electronic auctions are "Rarely Usable". While it is true many old molding planes may have problims in my experance many more are in fine usable condition. Is certainly not a rare occurance to find a very nice condition molding plane on ebay. I just sold 4 or 5 really nice older vintage side beads that had no problims what so ever on it.I think the fact they went for only $15 - $25 proves it isn't rare to find these old planes in this condition. I would think it will be hard to sell new made planes for 3 times this. Will point out too that the planes I sold were high quality planes with full boxing which I think is needed for planes like this to last.

Was interesting seeing the plane with the old handles on it but i would really be surprised if the handles were from the 1500's and wonder how you came up with that.....Still think it's great that you are making some wood planes and again good luck with it......Todd

Web Page Problems?

Don Thompson - Cutler Ridge, Florida

>Chad,

I do not know why, but I can not seem to get your home page to finish downloading. Several of the images end up with just the little image icon thingy (I do not know what it is called). Also, when I click on the links to the sub-pages for the individual plane types, nothing seems to happen. I am running MS Internet Explorer 6.0.

My apologies. . .

Tony Sade (Charleston, WV)

>for the curt, critical, and totally unnecessary response to Chad's post. I suppose I was thinking of the prohibition on commercial posts over on the "Classified" section, but more likely, it was simply a stupid, knee-jerk reaction spewed without any thought or justification. As one who is just beginning to experiment with hand tools, and in particular, trying to find hand planes that fit the kind of work I'm thinking of, and trying to do, I should have recognized the value of Chad's effort and the benefit that comes from having tool craftsmen and women post about their creative endeavors.

To anyone I might have offended, and in particular, to Chad, my sincerest apologies. Tony

>Mr. Stanford, please try to conduct yourself politely. Reading and writing require completely distinct skill sets. Many people who have trouble spelling when writing, especially typing, have no problem whatsoever recognizing misspelled words. Bill's comment is quite valid and helpful to someone who is asking for advise on web page design and presentation. Such a comment might be less appropriate in response to a forum posting, unless there is a serious possibility for misunderstanding.

>I haven't looked at the web page yet, but Ellis point out that the images are very large, something Chad is going to have to work on. They are probably overflowing your browser's cache or the browser is timing out waiting for them to download. It seems as if Shepherd Plane Co. had similar problems when they were initially putting together their web presence.

>Darn it! I wanna come and hunt where you do! I totally agree with him since every old woodie I have encountered (local or over the internet)were less than "user" grade. This includes Ebay! Anyway, I believe you that you find and sell decent stuff, but majority of the goods out there are in pretty sorry shape. Well at least that's what I've experienced.

>Besides storage space, that is why upload photos are limited to 40k or so. It gives reasonable storage requirements, adequate (in most cases) resolution/pixel size for web use, and reasonable load times for slow connections. The photos on the articles page are usually kept at around 40k or less for the same reasons, even though they are not under the size restrictions.

>A lot of very interesting stuff on your site.

Another suggestion:

On the sub-pages for the various types for tools, I recommend that you change the coding, etc., so that when one clicks on one of the little images of the planes, etc., that a larger, detailed image opens up. It is hard (for me, at any rate) to see much detail of the tools in question.

Let us know when you make your changes!

>Same here, Chico. I no longer buy woodies on ebay unless I'm prepared to install a new key, collecting (and then only boxwood versions), or am looking for a nicely dried small piece of old wood. I've noticed the newer ECE planes tend to be new, in great condition; but they're not great deals.

Start looking outside the US

Bob Hackett

>I`ve had excellent luck buying from the UK.The planes are not as banged up or split, the irons on the last batch were almost full length with little rust and no pitting and the boxing was all there and tight.

I lightly scrubbed them with turps and fine steel wool and then waxed them, sharpened and off to work they went. All at about 1/2 the cost of the banged up rejects I bought off the stateside sellers before I learned better.

Asking ALOT of questions helps but I`ve still had the best luck buying from knowledgable UK sellers. If you throw in with other WWers you know the shipping isn`t even that bad.

>I just don't believe that a side bead molding plane in very good condition is a rare find. I just took a few min. and did a search on ebay for completed auctions for side bead molding planes and over 20 came up, sure a few look to be in lesser condition then you might want but many sound like good planes. For example, #6134049257 , looks like it is being sold by a knowledgable tool seller with good feed back and sounds like a great plane and it sold for around $25. What would be wrong with this plane? Just one of many I am sure that was sold. I certainly don't think i live in an old tool heaven and I see molding planes all the time that are in excellent condition. Believe me if 100 year plus molding planes in excellent condition were a "Rare plane" to find they would sell for more then a Stanley no.4 on Ebay don't you think....and most don't!.....Todd
