P.S. Any luck with those plans? I just finished riving (is that the right word), drawknifing, and planing some quartersawn black locust blanks from the firewood collection. Got two handles and a crosspiece ready for the coping saw, spokeshave, #49 and sandpaper.

I do have a question for you: in your notes you say, "a tight fitting tenon mortise and tenon joint is critical to a stable saw frame. Pare your tenon carefully."

I had thought that you wanted a sloppy-ish tenon here so that there was room for the tenon(s) on both ends to "pivot" as the windlass tightened. I thought this "pivoting" cause the ends of the crosspiece to act as a fulcrum and the handles as a lever with the result as the windlass is wound, the blade is drawn taut. Am I 180� wrong here?

Upon re-examining Mack Headley's bowsaw, his almost took a LOT of effort to get the joint apart it was so tight. Even a hard wood like maple flexes and the windlass actually makes the maple flex. Surprised me too the first time.

I'm not sure what you do for a living, but if it's related to technology, maybe your employer would give you the time off if you told them that it was a "hands-on seminar" (i.e. tool show and tell) dealing with a wide range of "cutting edge" technologies (i.e. sharp plane, chisel and saw blades):-)

>Well, for the most part I shuffle water (the drinking kind) around the county - really. I don't think the water authority would *give* me time off - but I might see if I can take the weekend off. I'm sure the cutting edge thing wouldn't "wash" any way. :) But I've missed so many of these things it might be worth taking off. Especially if someone tempts me with hand tools.

I'm sure that Skip doesn't need me to provide him with incentives, but if he did they'll be present at the breakfast with their tools, "artwork" and woodworking experience. Not only is it a great chance to swap stories and show off tools, it's also a great chance to bring in a problem tool or ask a question.

I'm looking forward to this one again. I'm hoping to have a bowsaw ready for the show and tell. If I do, don't look too closely because it might look something like Dave Anderson's :-) except not nearly as nice! Rough sawed out one handle yesterday evening. Darn that ornery black locust - I may have to work a new "feature" into the handles.

Oh, well. Good luck with the water boys. I'd be surprised if you didn't have a good time. Hope you can make it. If not, don't worry... if you're interested, we'll keep inviting you 'til it works out.
