This 'Tools and Shops' issue is pretty much a waste. I was very disappointed, as were all others I know about; and "all" is NOT an exaggeration).

Also, it's hardly necessary to create something new and ostensibly better every time you have criticism of what's being done. There wouldn't be enough time.

I browsed through the Tools and Shop issue tonight and thought it was okay, but not okay enough to get me to buy it.

The article with Jimmy Carter looked interesting as did the article about the guy doing 18th century reproductions. His method of reproducing carvings using wet rawhide is kind of cool.

>Yep I agree. FWW has a great history and I am far from cancelling my subscription. But Popular Woodworking is catching up fast. The the job Schwarz and Company are doing is impressive. They are slowly transforming what was once a poor publication to one that is approaching the top. FWW needs some new energy. It seems they are just going through the motions and using too many easy and over done topics. I would suggest they attempt to get creative and take some risks. Specifically, I would enjoy more articles on hand tools as well as in depth articles/profiles on woodworkers, their styles, techniques, shops etc.

Hardly!

Lots of folks around here criticize Stanley and Record planes, but I've not heard anyone say that unless they make a better one they're part of the problem. I don't need to be a veterinarian to know my dog is sick. Likewise, I don't need to be able, or even want to write a better article to know the quality of those in Fine Woodworking is slipping.
