Galootish Reeding & Fluting on turnings?

>I've been reading some about Sheraton style furniture, which has reeding and/or fluting on turned legs. The electron-based construction articles I've seen suggest using a box attached to the lathe bed to align a router, and then using the lathe's indexing to route parallel reeds and/or flutes.

How did the original workmen do this on turnings with hand tools? Did they do it all freehand, or did they use a similar method and a straightedge (similar to how to make flutes on a flat piece of wood)? This is a galootish construction technique I've never seen described.

This one was made with a bolt on one end holding a shop-made center, and a sort of a faceplate sort of thing on the other end that could be bolted both to the workpiece and rotated in degreed increments to evenly space the flutes around the spindle.

A carriage was built above the spindle that carried a shop-made scratch stock that rode the walls on each side of the spindle with a stop at the appropriate distance from the end, and the ends of the flutes were then finished off with a matching gouge.

I've also seen this referred to as a "moulding box" (presumably "molding box" in the US)

IIRC William Duffield had an awesome presentation on doing some tapered flutes on some shaped (not turned) legs, back on an "experiment in community building", that also had some decent woodowrking information.

>I think the Sheraton style reeding on turned legs was traditionally done with H&R planes riding on a batten or in a saw kerf. Looks like a job for a #1 or #2 hollow. Once the first one is done, it can be used as a reference for the others.

I usually use a router or laminate trimmer, mounted in a box that either rides on lathe bed ways or a flat benchtop. The last fluted ones, architectural, were done on a Legacy mill. The problems with using one of these methods for reeds is the fragility of the sharp point of the carbide router bit, which usually has to be custom made. Another serious issue is that the diameters of the flutes change as the diameter of the column changes. I finish the shapes with a home made scraper, ground from a hacksaw blade. Even if you started with a gouge or a molding plane, you would have the same problem. I have seen articles showing reeds carved with v-gouges, by hand, following a penciled mark. That is for sure the way "pineapples" and flame finials, with spiral details, were done.

For stopped flutes, the router bits tend to burn the ends of the flutes. You won't find a lot of old stopped flutes, because they are difficult to do. Most of the old guys took the easier route of making the flutes, cutting off the ends of the columns and adding turned elements above and below. If I start with a router, again, I finish with a home made, specially shaped scraper, especially the stopped ends, because the router bit doesn't make the same shape as a bent carving gouge would have made. The problem with molding planes on stopped flutes is that you can't use them to make the shape consistent near the ends, so you are forced to carve the ends of the flutes with a carving gouge.

>It's funny....I just finished doing this for fluted corner columns on a 18th Penn. tall clock I am making. I simply turned the columns to the proper diameter, placed them in a long, 3 sided box with 3 carraige bolts and wing nuts. The bolts and wing nuts act as a clamping mechanism by slightly squeezing the box sides around the turned column. I did use a #10 round to create a small cove along both sides of the box. This cove acted as a small cradle to better hold the turned colunms while I did the fluting. I then created a two-handled beading tool out of a couple Veritas beading tools and an extra long 3/4" dowel. It worked out great. I had planned to used my H&Rs but as it turned out, I didn't need to. It was actually quite fun and added a very nice featue to the clock.
