Sandor in Boyds, MD

>Another case of auction hysteria? or is this particular Stanley 923 10in brace rare? I've got a half dozen of them myself. Can I cash in? Seems that these have been going for about $10 ea and the bits for $40 - $100 /set.

Any ideas? $610.00 seems way off, more than usual.

Sandor (how many LN's and LV's could I buy with the profits...)

Unbelievable!

David Miller from Iowa

>Looking at the bids, a low feedback bidder MAY have been kiting this, but that doesn't explain a 124 feedback bidder going for it. Can't help but think that something non-eBay is going on, like manufacturing inflated prices for insurance or retail purposes (yessir, this brace is a deal for $200, look what one just sold on eBay for).

>Walters list this Stanley "100 plus" Brace at $75-$150 with ones like this having the original decal going for a premium. I know I live in an old tool hell and don't get out much but i do see a good many braces and I don't think i have ever seen a 100 plus one still with most of it's decal. By the number of guys that say they have one just like it guess they are common to find in this condition in other more tool rich areas of the country though....Still the auction did go pretty high, I think if you go by the high book price for everything it comes out to around $400....I see that the high bidder paid a large sum for a very nice Yankee brace too and looks like he just has a thing for nice braces and has the $ to buy what he wants....nothing wrong with that !......Todd

Not only that, ....

Mike L

>...we have no idea of the buyer's motivation. While I wouldn't pay that much for that brace and bits, there are probably people who think I've spent money extravagantly on other things. Heck, some day I may spend that much on a nice Ultimatum; just 'cause I think they're works of art. Other people will spend $100 (or more) per head for dinner and not think anything of it.

I agree with Todd H. If somebody will get that much enjoyment from the brace and bits that they deemed it worth that much money, all the power to them.

Cheers,

Mike

>Moses, Six hundred bucks for a common brace and box of bits is outrageous...I don't care if it still has it's little sticker on top. For that much money it should have the sticker, the box, the reciept, the change and the car the original buyer drove to the hardware store.

The bits and box are not something you see every day but I've seen them (without the decorative cellophane tape) for fifty bucks or less at the flea markets and they've sat there unsold for weeks...Rob

Agree

>He's either real dumb, or there's monkey business. It's a collectible brace IMO, but not by much because the 100+ label is pretty chewed up. The augers would be the real catch of the package, because they're original Russell Jennings Mfg. Co., not Stanley. But it's a busted set, for crying out loud--at least two Irwin pattern in there that I see.

If you look at the bidding, he put his number in with lots of time left (same thing on the Yankee that Todd mentioned). Then a guy with 1 buy ran him methodically to $300. So the next morning (the day the auction closes), he reloads. Didn't decide to snipe--he actually just reloads. Then an interesting thing--a guy with no buys tests to see if there's any money left on the table. There is! So then the 1-buy fellow comes back and runs him to $600.

The way it looks to me is that the winner either wanted it to go high for some reason, and there's monkey business. Or else he's so dumb that he didn't figure out the augers were busted, and he also didn't snipe--even after he sat there and watched the other guy run his initial bid to the limit. He actually came back and doubled down, and let the same guy do it again!

Wiley who has a dog in the fight because this guy got a Yankee I really wanted.

>It's only $600. I've heard of people spending upwards of $20,000 for a CAR or TRUCK. The most I've ever spent on a car is $5000. These are things that are going to wear out in 10 years and we won't have them any more.

>I have no problems spending six hundred bucks on a good tool, but this is money thrown away on average, incomplete, common tools. That much money could buy some really nice tools...I have four nice infill planes that didn't cost me anywhere near that much combined. You could get a bucket full of good tools from Lee Valley or Garrett Wade for that kind of dough. Or a half bucket from Lie Nielsen.

Ultimately, it was the auction winner's money to spend as he pleased, and if he's happy, more speed to him. Doesn't mean I can't think he's a fool.

>I really don't think you could call the brace this fellow bought a "avarage, incomplete or common tool" but maybe I am mistaken. I don't know how many people will read this but imagine maybe a few, imagine also they will own a few braces and if a brace like this is "common" like Rob says there should be more then a couple owned here, So fellows if you have a Stanley 100 plus brace with 100% finish and most of the decal still on the pad how about steppen up and tell us about it....Please no stories like " I have one EXACTLY like it but it was made by Millers Falls and is kind of rusty with a broken pad but I only paid $5 for it"......Todd

$600 Decal? *LINK*

Rob Brophy Niagara Falls

>Here's a 10" 923 100+ brace with decal that closed for a little over fifty bucks. The reserve wasn't met but one would think the price reached must be what the market will bear. So was our buyer paying six hundred bucks for the $50 brace or the average, incomplete, common set of bits?
