Advice on cracks in plane mouths.

>I started aquiring planes on the bay and before I became astute enough to ask the right questions and ended up with several that have cracks in the mouth.
Neither of the cracks are very severe and do not seem to be all the way through.
Question is are they destined to be recycled? They seem to work ok but I would assume that the cracks would continue to worsen. What should I do with them?

>Presuming they are garden variety planes, I would part them out and trash the cracked parts. Or use them until you need to do this. One cannot have enought plane parts when sliding down the slippery slope.

>Are they worth saving?If so then I would bring them to someone who can do a right job of brazing them.
If not I would just use them to practice on.Stop drill the crack and see if it proceeds any further when you use it.If not then that`s all that may be needed.
If it does crack further then strip it and braze it yourself.Use it to experiment on before parting it out and throwing the body in the trash.You have nothing to lose and just might gain some skills that will serve you well in the future when it really counts.If nothing else you could end up with a decent large chisel plane or a neanderthal windchime.
