The Two Cherries and Hirsch chisels are the same steel, made in the same plant. I have the Hirsch firmers and love them. Both brands always get very good reviews in the magazines and from people who own them. Can you get better chisels? Probably. Will the Two Cherries serve you very well? Absolutely.

Now send back our NHLer's so we can get some hockey going! I envy you right now.

I think you'd get more response on this, except that the archives are chock full of good testimonials and test results on Two Cherries.

Several months ago, maybe a year, the folks at Furniture & Cabinet Making magazine (UK) tested a wide range of western chisels. They were trying to figure out the best available replacement for vintage western chisels. Two Cherries came out on top overall, and among the UK brands, I think they picked Ray Iles' chisels. The test criteria were a combination of ergonomics and edge holding, as I recall.

It's a killer price. In fact, outrageous. Go for it.

At first I picked up the set of 5 in a wooden box, but managed to put it down again and pick the 6mm instead.(all while telling myself "I dont _need_ more chisels...yeah right")But then payday is just ahead =) So I will bring the straightedge and pick the good ones.

Oh and I thought I had fixed the offset handle - well guess again. It didnt feel straight so I checked, and it was still off. So I put it in the vice and tried to twist the handle. Didnt work at all. I actually couldnt get it to move, but the blade twisted instead. And guess what end ended up against the concrete floor when it rolled off the bench? I suppose a flat on the handle would fix that.

So tomorrow Ill pick them straight and well-handled ones and save myself some fuss. Aint shopping for tools good?

I think (conformation welcomed) that David Charleworth disagreed in a letter in subsequent issue. His objection was the rounded (buffed?) backs that have already been mentioned. This makes flattening the backs all the way to the sides laborious.

This is annoying, since it would be cheaper for the manufacturer to just omit the process. Perhaps "a word" might be in order?

The 8, 10, 14 & 15 cost 129 SEK each(and so did the 6mm I bought monday), and the 24mm cost 159 SEK. The knife 64 SEK, giving a grand total of todays toys of 739 SEK or 108USD.

Same stuff from joel would have cost 121 USD + shipping, and 25% tax would have been added in the customs in sweden. So I think I did quite well on this.... Of course time spent also matters, but since I bought some other stuff in the same area I see it as recreational time.

Given the actual starting point of the chisels (Germany), and the end point (Sweden) it tallies with my sense of rightness that sending them via NY ain't the cheapest way :-)

This is not meant to imply any criticism of Joel, BTW.

(kinda what you were asking for.;-) I bought a set of them, and they did not have the rounded edges due to the buffing, and were quite a bit cheaper to boot. They did require sharpening, but it was a lot easier not having to take off the rounding, not to mention not paying for the buffing that I didn't want anyway.

I never meant to critisize any of the dealers about the pricing, especially not joel who is a helpful person. The thing is I havent seen these chisels "for real" before, Ive only been drooling in various catalogs on the web(Joels mostly).

A set from any of the web dealers would have been more $$ and longer wait for me until now, so Im just happy I found them here, was able to hold them and feel what they are like, pick the straightest/flattest ones and be able to go back and buy more of them =)

Its like wanting something thats far away for a long time, and then have it show up within reach by accident. And be not so expensive as you thought. Im just happy, thats all....

Joel, why do they buff them? Is it cosmetic or is there some reason Ive missed?
