I use my rubber deadblow mallet for assembly, because I have found the wooden heads will leave depressions in the surface, especially when the glue is approaching the end of its open time.

I only have the 12oz one,not sure i would have a use for the bigger ones, i goto the big mallet i made out of bubinga when i need to get serious.

OT note:

Swmbo got me the very nice LV plane adjusting hammer and the other day i tapped on a iron and it broke.......yuk,so now i get to fix it with bubinga, should be cool tool when i finish

I was going to point out that LV would probably replace it for you, but you will probably enjoy making a new one from the bubinga, anyway.

I use a 375g japanese hammer with my japanese DT and mortice chisles. That thing weighs about twice that. It's a nice assembly mallet.

I spoke with Kevin Drake yesterday (and nagged him about the lame web site), and he said that he uses LN chisels when he makes dovetails with western chisels, and that he uses his hammers (of course?).
