Happened to catch this in the latest catalog from Joel at the Museum Of Woodworking Tools,a 3 piece set of Shapton Pro series 1000,5000,and 8000.I wouldn't think much more would be needed.I have conventional waterstones 800,1200,4000,8000 but maybe Santa would like me to upgrade to the Shapton's(I'm hoping Mrs.Claus thinks so,anyways..hint,hint)

>I have the set of 1000, 5000, 8000. I only use the 1000 and the 5000 most of the time. My 8000 sits in its box 90% of the time unless I am sharpening my japanese irons then I go to 8000 but I so rarely use them it almost seems like a waste. I would suggest contacting Stanley Harrelson and asking him what a good coarser stone would be so you get coarser, 1000, and 5000.

I honestly see no difference in standard wood or exotics by taking a western plane iron up to 8000.

>Thomas: I have been using only the 1000 and 8000 for years. After initial sharpening, I only have to go back to the 1000 every once in a while. Also, check out the method that David Charlesworth uses to sharpen. It is outstanding.
