Dovetail Saw Set

Dan Clermont in Burnaby

>I have a Tom Law sharpened and Set dovetail saw which works quite well but the set is quite wide when compared to some of the other saws Tom has done for me.

I measured the blade thickness to be 0.0020" and the set on the teeth to be 0.0035" so I have about 7.5 thou on either side. The other Rip Carcass saw I have has 4 thou on either side and very little slop.

The Dovetail saw has 15TPI and the blade has small kink from a previous user and before I sent it off to Tom. Tom didn't think the kink would cause a problem and I am wondering if Tom may have increased the set to accomadate for the kink and what would happen if I removed allot of the set to prevent the slop in my dovetail cuts.

Really though, LOML wants to buy me a dovetail saw after seeing the Rob Cosman Dovetail video and seeing some of Rob's dovetails in person.

TIA,

Dan Clermont

>Dan, that's a lot of set in a dovetail saw. You say it has a kink in it? Knowing Tom's reputation, I'd bet it didn't cut right with less set. Take a stone to the side of the teeth to take some of the set out and see how it cuts. Do a little at a time so it doesn't screw anything up.

>I am not dissing Tom Law at all. I wondered too if he put the set in to help with the kink.

The saw tends to wander a wee bit while cutting and the LN saw was a huge improvement. Same with my Rip Carcass saw that Tom law did which has set in the 4 thou range.

NEVER turn down an offer from your significant other to buy you a tool. Why, it's like refusing to kiss her - she'd be insulted.
