favorite method for making wooden handplane?

>I'd like to make a wooden plane or two. Thinking of a scrub and smoother to start.
It would seem that the simplest construction would be laminated, with a pin across the body for the wedge to wedge under, as in this link. http://www.crfinefurniture.com/1pages/sitelinks/howplane.html
Not too much harder I would think, is the method that Steve Knight uses with a cutout in the cheeks to accept the wedge.
Any reason to use one method over the other?
It also seems that some designs use a chip breaker and others do not. Does it matter much?
Favorite blades for a homemade woodie?
Any tips anyone feels like passing along are appreciated.
