>down in San Diego, there for work but stayed over the weekend for fun with LOML. This is the second time we've touristed in San Diego, and better this time. Mostly OT highlights:

The "Berkeley," a steam ferry that probably carried my mother to work across the Bay (that's San Francisco Bay for non-Northern Californians) during the 30's. Did most of its work for the Southern Pacific. Now in the San Diego Maritime Museum, and THAT must have been a fun transit down the coast!

A visit to two museums half a mile down a dirt road on the back side of a village off Mexico's Hwy 3, between Ensanada and Tecate, that focused on the Russian Molokan colony established in 1905 in a town called "Zarco," roughly halfway between the two cities; it lasted until 1960, and there's Russian blood in quite a few of the local families, it seems. Obligatory handtool content: the displays had some lovely, but not particularly exotic, tools, notably a rather rusty Stanley No. 40 and several eggbeater drills. LOML would not let me stop at the dusty little used-tool sale under one of the trees, but just as well: hard to imagine slipping a plane (sharp, scary edge!) past airport security. Anyone headed to San Diego or a vacation in northern Mexico is welcome to contact me for more information, though I can't offer a whole lot since we left the map behind.
