>I was trying to watch the game, but my littlest one kept crawing up the basement steps. So at halftime, I threw to gether this gate. Couple of wooden brackets with dowels and it swings like the twenty's. gawd I love woodworking

>It looks like you're OK, but I hope your openings are 4" or under - after hearing why this is code on porch and stair railings, I'm a believer (little kids can crawl through a larger opening, but their heads can't fit, so they wind up stuck and, in really bad cases, hanging by the head).

Nice gate, and cute little rug rat at the bottom of the pic there.

>Well, by coincidence mostly, the posts do fall a smidge under 4" (3+3/4") but are a little over at the ends (4+3/8"). I totally forgot about this. I'm going to do a head check, and this could be a redo as the little guy is pretty daring

Now that you mention it, I remember my daugter getting her head stuck in Grandma's code compliant fence. Without thinking, I was able to pry the wrought iron bars appart, which sprung back after she was freed. I don't think I'd have as much luck with my cheapo pine gate, as even pine is too tough to bend on edge.
