You have a newer Spires infill plane. Poor thing has seen better days though. Your lucky, there some splended posts about rehabing infills here. One thing for sure you'll need a new blade for it. It's going to need alot of TLC but for $20.00 and some of your winter you could have a nice plane.

If by "cap iron" you meant "lever cap" - the pix show a little green on it. Are you sure that it is not brass underneath the crud?

Have fun cleaning it up, and be sure to show us the "after" pix.

But the blade should not be tapered (only wedged planes had tapered irons) and you should get it made last. THe reason is that once the entire plane is back in good shape you can then measure the mouth and get a blade ground up to exactly the right thickness for the mouth thickness you need. And it's not particualarly expensive to do - Ray Iles for one does this all the time.
