Deer are very elusive down here. You got to drag yourself out through the swamps to find them. It is one of the most challenging environments for hunting deer, and if you get one, you've really done something. On the other hand, wild hog are plentiful (and tasty).

Weekend before the 13th is black powder, then general gun starts on the 13th and runs to January 9th. Wild hog (and small game) runs along with deer season and it is not unlikely you'll see some of those.

Not sure what just a hunting license costs; I always get a hunting/fress/salt fishing license, which costs $36. On top of that, we hunt in a wildlife management area (Three Lakes) which is $3 a day or you can buy a pass for all of them for a year for $27.

All you need is a 12 ga. shotgun or a rifle (not a rimfire), a 30-30 or 30.06 would be ideal. We have stands both in brush (for shotgun) and in open areas (for rifle). About a half dozen stands, I guess and we use climbers in addition. We could come up with something gunwise for you if need be. Clothing wise it is hard to say yet. It is wet out there so some kind of high waterproof boots would be good. It's been hot and it's been cold so I usually bring something for each kind of weather and layer stuff so I can shed easily as the day progresses. Of course, camo pants and shirt and hat, and an orange vest.

We have a camp set up with a friend's Coleman popup, and Tim (my brother) and my "hunting cabin", which is a little box with bunks that we drop off my flatbed trailer at the beginning of season and leave out there. Even got a genny this year. It's a nice little setup.

My brother and I pretty much always hunt together and another friend who lived next door to my other brother (the guy with the popup, who by the way is from Maine) usually is out there. Time to time, a couple of guys who work with Tim come out to hunt. Sometimes they bring a tent, sometimes they share the trailer.

We are always glad to have more along. The WMA is 50,000 acres all together, so there is room. So let's plan something.

Mike in Lanark County (just outside of Ottawa) where it is pretty common to see 10-15 deer in a field.

I use fleece as my warm layer under the camo and under that, just jeans, thermal underwear if it is goin to be cold. The orange vests are cheap lil things you can pick up at Walmart. I prolly got an old camo cap laying around here you can use. I'm going to recheck the dates and get back to you on when we will start. I hear there's a quota hunt somewhere there at the beginning of season, so we may have to wait until the weekend following the 13th. I'll let ya know. FYI because of the hurricanes we've heard a lot of deer are being seen out there as they move to neww territories--ought to increase our chances. I got the 4x4 so just bring yourself and your 30-30 down here to redneckia.
