How do I do this?

Steve Kubien

>Hi everybody,

I am making a small wall rack. Picture a through dovetail drawer with no bottom panel. This will lie flat against the wall. On top of this will be a peaked "roof". The rack part is walnut and the roof is makore. How do I attach the roof?

My thought so far is to notch the underside of the roof so that the rack is recessed into it at the corners. Unfortunately I do not think this will provide enough surface for a successful gluing job. I could nail through the roof but I really don't want to after the work that went into it (top surface of the roof is curved). There will be a panel toward the front edge of the rack so you will not be able to see through the peak of the roof. I could just apply some largish glue blocks behind the panel since they wouldn't be seen but for some reason I am looking for something more elegant.

Opinions and suggestions are encouraged, as always. I am willing to be convinced to keep things simple and go with the glue blocks. Go ahead, convince me!

Thanks,

>Could you cut the bird's mouth in the roof, as you're describing, but for a couple of dovetails into the walls? You'd have to assemble the roof in place, since the two sides of the roof would have to slide in to meet at the peak.

Of course, there's always screws, but they're hardly elegant.

Sounds like good secret compartment prospects too.

>What about a hidden spline right where the two join. The spline could hidden by not going all the way thru (like a biscuit) and maybe a little expoxy to make sure it really hold together.
