How to sessions are always good - how to file a saw, sharpen a cutter or fettle a plane.

I went to a thing decades ago where a guy was working green logs - started with a log and made a St Roy type shaving horse in maybe an hour. He stood on top of a 24" thick green log and axed through it in about a minute - I was impressed.

Not really my thing, but SWMBO thinks those guys that carve wood gnome faces into roots and crotchwood are great (Why don't you do that instead of buy tools all day? How many planes do you need, anyway??)

I went to a chip carving workshop that lasted a couple hours - enjoyed it and decorated up some saw handles.

Nov-cutting mortice & tennon joints

Others that I remember,

Roger Nixon doing demo on restoring/tuning hand planes

Alaska chain saw mill

flocking for band sawn box drawers

carving an eagle to be used for bronze casting

leather work

design and implement dust collection system

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll see what else I can come up with and let you know.

>Sorry to say I am a member of two woodworking guilds, one carving club abd one turning club. Usually do not go because I usually end up falling asleep and disturbing the other members. Best meetings I ever attended were: Mike Dresdner (Evergreen Woodworkers Guild Founder) on the new Bullseye French Polish, he is also a very funny guy; Jim Tolpin, another Washingtonian, on table saw jigs from his book; and, Sandor (I won't even try to guess how to spell his last name)on the art of tools also from his book. The Festool guy from California demoed all his stuff and another guy from Dewalt or Makita showed us the new line. We toured the Systematic saw blade factory. Most meeting are just show and tell without a real program. That's when I fall asleep.

I'm a member of the Ottawa Woodworkers Assoc. up here in Ont., Canada. The group is about 1 1/2 years old, so I don't have a lot of examples. The club is 95% Normites.

Our first trip was to fellow member and woodworking books author, Danny Proulx studio/shop/store.

Another was a trip to Rosewood Studio in Almonte for a tour and presentation by Ted Brown and Robert Van Buren (former students of College of the Redwoods).

Next was a tour of the Veritas machine shop and R&D facilities with a couple of Rob's right hand guys. Unfortunately Rob was out of the country or we would have been driving him up the wall. Try and picture 35 people that want to take samples home with them. :-)

This past weekend a handful of us took a trip down to the Toronto area for a show that is put on by a couple of dozen used/antique tool dealers. It was a big learning experience for me, being fairly new to the tools that you don't plug into the wall.

This evening we had a sawmill operator/grader in for a presentation on domestic woods. I was rather suprised at how comfortable and prepared he was in front of a large group.

Besides that we've filled in the rest of the time with general Q$A and Show and Tell. (Boy, those Sauer and Steiner's feel good in my hands!)

At around 325 members we have a mix of all types of folks from Normites to Nenaderthals, Carvers, Period furniture enthusiasts, and a strong group of turners. Our general philosophy on meetings is to BOTH educate and motivate. To this end, we plan meetings to be informative and more importantly to showcase both work and techniques which force our members to strive for a higher level of craftsmanship.
