Push or pull (sharpening poll)?

Frank D. in Montreal

>Hi everyone,

I suspect this is a stupid question so have kept it to myself for quite a while, but here goes: is there a correct way to move a blade when you sharpen it on water stones? I know this is splitting hairs and it probably doesn't make a big difference, but I'd still like to know what you people do.

I go back and forth on my coarse stones but on the last two (4000, 8000) I pull. I know this causes a slight burr but that comes off with a few sideways swipes on the back with the 8000. L. Lee recommends only pushing, but doesn't Charlesworth say only pull???

Thanks for any input.

Frank
