Good day at the auction

Bryan Danner - Broad Ripple, IN

>Had a good day at an estate auction today.

Tally:

Stanley #65, no rust, 99% jappaning, war-time casting, great shape: $15

Matched set of 12 paring chisels, full length, shiney, little rust, "Celebrated Hardware Co": $63

James Swan 7/8" firmer chisel, full length, shiney, a little bit of rust on top of bevel: $5

I spent more than I wanted today, but still think I came out pretty well. I really wasn't interested in the 65, but it was about to sell for $10, and I couldn't let that happen.

I've already got a "Celebrated" chisel, and really like it, so I swooped in for the matched set. Funny thing is, they had the handles in a separate box lot from the bodies. They sold the box with the handles first, and I nabbed them up. Then I got nine of the chisel bodies in a separate lot. When I was looking throught the loot after I left, I then realized that the box with the handles had another three chisels from the same set....totally unexpected. I thought I was bidding on 9 matched chisels, and came away with 12.

None of the chisels have been used much. They look like they've been sharpened, used a few times, then put in a drawer and forgotten about. The chisels range in length from 13" to 16" long (with handle). Sizes are 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 1-3/4", 2".

The steel alone on the Swan is 12" long.

If you can't tell, I'm pretty excited about the chisels.

>Sheesh, I can feel the sucking wind from here. Nice haul! Next thing you're gonna tell us is that you live in "Old Tool Heck". How 'bout a picture of that set of chisels?

Cheers,

Mike

>Nice find on the matched set.

I just recently had an exceptional day at an estate auction, the only correlation I can come up with is that when the college football team in your locale is playing, auction attendance tends to be rather light.

Go Bucks! :)
