Another one to look at is the Veritas flat spokeshave (the one with the higher angle and wooden handles) for later on. It is a good compliment to the low angle and I have ended up using it (and enjoying it) more than I expected.

It's a nice shave and a good first one to buy.

However, it does have some limitations, especially on inside curves. These problems are what prompted me to eventuall expand my shave collection to include convex shaves.

Still I think this is a great first shave. It will perform well, especially for the price.
