Lie-Nielson Chisels

Larry Clinton - Frankfort, Indiana

>Kinda gloat, but am looking for information. I just ordered the set of Lie-Nielson Chisels, I hated to spend that amount but after purchasing and using their Dovetail saw last month, decided they would be worth the short term pain. My question is: the website still has the possible delay in shipping of 6 to 8 weeks. I know some of you here have bought the chisels lately so wondered if that delay is still happening?

Actually the dovetail saw purchase is causing the chisel purchase. I have very poor chisels, (Craftsman's "best") - I have flattened the backs, polished to a mirror finish. Sharpened until they popped hair off my arm. As soon as I started to chop out the dovetails I cut with the new saw, the edges both folded and chipped. I couldn't get through one set of three dovetails without resharpening. They are pure junk. So I have been lurking here for a while and everyone had high praises for the LN's. I would rather pay to much for a great set than a moderate price for a lessor set. I am only planning on buying one set the rest of my life - retiring within about 2 years.

As an aside, I LOVE the LN saw. My son and I have been practicing cutting dovetails, have some drawer sides done for one of my worktables. I wouldn't take pictures or do any bragging yet, but the drawers are functional and straight. Just a few gaps in the dovetails here and there :~). Actually much better than I thought I could do with the practice time I have expended.

>Good looking dovetails aren't so hard, all you need is good (sharp) tools and work out some techniques - that's all. As many other things, they look more dificult then what it takes to make them :)

Make few for practice, then build a project with dovetails and post some pictures. It's fine even if you want to brag a little :)

>SWMBO gave me a set for my birthday. They told her a delay of several weeks and they came in a few days later!?! Maybe just lucky, dunno. They are very nice.

>Well, they sent me an order acknowledgment, but did say they are on 6 ~ 8 weeks backorder. Oh well, guess I'll wait with bated breath :~).

>I just got mine a couple weeks ago (and you won't be sorry). Total wait time was 3 weeks and a day. Amazing edge holding ability.

Have fun.
