why do this to a plane? *LINK*

>The coffin plane in this auction appears to have two raised-head tacks at the heel and toe - of the sole. (See both the profile and sole pics.) They sold, but any idea what this even could have been intended to do? Seems like it would just make the plane immediately unusable (with the wood not held down before the blade at all) until they were removed.

Possibly for planing convex surfaces; but that's a wild guess...
