I'm working on a mahogany screen door with decorative corner pieces.I matched corner pieces from another door on the same old farmhouse. If I can find the time,I have mortises to cut in the legs for the small table I'm building.

Working on my coat rack made out of hurricane wood, i hate black olive for sure, starting to dry now and is not fun.

Just got my 3000W inverters from UPS, so tomorrow is test and tune time.

Life is becoming normal again in south Florida.

Had to give it up last night as the blisters on my hands where starting to make it hard to continue. Guess I shoulda' put those floves on alot earlier eh? Ahhhhhhhhhhh well, it's already 100% better than it was. :~)

I had a nice log of bottle brush I saved from last Spring, but I just found that it had termites in it, and we had to throw it out. :-(

Have you ever made anything from royal poinciana? It seems very soft to me.

After Frances,with no power and nothing much to do,the street i live on is lined with black olive so i made the mallet you see in attached pic. The stuff green is just ok to draw knife and spokeshave but when it starts to dry it really is hard. Also working on twig coat and hat rack, along the lines of that chair that was on small LV catalog year or so ago.

Royal poinciana is great turning wood imo,easy to spalt and turn,lots of color and grain texture.Make's great weed pots like in the pic.

Last but not least,just got back from local flea and got the trammel points for 1$.....i picked them up and asked how much......the guy says "iam not taking less than a 1$ for them",with a heavy sigh i said "ok".........hehe

>I got the end caps fitted on my workbench top this weekend. Actually, I've been working on them for the last several weekends. One end gave me fits until I finally figured out that I had cut the shoulders out of square on one side. A little shoulder plane action and the cap snugged up tight. Phew!!

We are going to take down a royal poinciana in the near future. Based on the looks of that weed pot, I think I will save some. The way that the branches rot and fall off, I would have thought it was garbage. Then again, I guess that the rot/fungus is what gives the nice markings.

In the first photo, the end cap looks to be one piece. In the second note, you mention still having to glue it together. (?) I can not make out what I am looking at in the second photo - do you have another shot? How will you fasten the end caps to the bench?

Are those bolt holes for the skirt on the front of the bench?

>Don, the end caps are 4" X 4" - made of two 2X4 pieces of maple. I haven't laminated the 2X4s together yet. In the 1st photo, they're stacked on top of each other, so they look like one piece. Hopefully they'll look like that when I glue them together! I'll bolt them to the bench top using 6" bolts with barrel nuts after I've dovetailed the front apron into each end cap. The apron is not in place in either photo. What you see is the dog-hole strip. The holes are for Veritas round bench dogs. I drilled the apron strip at the same time I drilled the dog-hole strip. The trick is going to be getting all the holes and the dovetails to line up when I glue the apron on.

It is a VERY sturdy bench. The base is 8/4 white oak with 16/4 legs. There are heavy duty machine levelers on each leg threaded into heavy steel leg caps to distribute the weight over the bottom cross section of each leg. I had the leg caps fabricated out of 1 3/8" steel plate. I can't push the bench out of position.

I have lots of digital photos of the bench construction, but only the recent ones are small enough to post on WC. I'll be glad to e-mail some to you if you're interested. I'm still trying to figure out how to resize photos without losing the image quality.
