Modifying the Veritas Honing Jig

>Mostly I sharpen my plane blades and chisels freehand on waterstones. I turn to the Veritas Sharpening System when establishing the bevel angle or when squaring the bevel on the blade.

The Veritas Bevel Angle Jig is basically a good design. The Honing Jig is well made but lets the side down because it is difficult to set the blade square on it and keep it that way - the screw hold down tends to twist the blade as it is tightened. In the past I have resorted to using a pair of vice grips to increase the tension of the screw, or just used an older Eclipse honing jig, which guarantees squareness (but I don�t like the narrow wheel it runs on).

I made a simple modification to the Veritas honing jig that takes the form of an attached Fence. This is a piece of aluminium that is screwed to the inside of the jig. Its squareness was achieved to trial-and-error and careful filing.

The fence has an additional advantage. It is placed on the right side of the jig since the screw hold down turn clockwise and tightening simply forces the blade against the fence.

With my fence (approx �� thick), the honing jig has the capacity for 2 �� wide blades. Narrower blades need to use an additional piece of packing to centre it (a little off centre has no detrimental effect).

I find that this simple modification makes it both easier and quicker to set up blades.

And here is a honing jig designed by my students, which solves the problem with a syncron clamping mechanism, the mircor fase can be made by chaning the rolling shaft (link below)

>I use a similar wooden jig to get (very!) repeatable angles in my Eclipse side-clamper. Even if your jig usn't exactly the distance printed on the side of the honing guide (which are approximate anyway) repeatability is far, far more important than accuracy.

The fence inside the Veritas honing jig is more versatile yet as easy to set up when you also use the Veritas bevel angle jig with it.

Nice job of discussing the problem and your solution. I like it, and think it is nicer than having to engage in mulitiple component solutions (it saves having to juggle a blade, guide and yet another item at the same time).

All I might add is a bolt coming in from the other side that would force the blade against the fence. Then you would have side clamping as well as registration (for standard blades)and would bring an end to the shifting so often encountered with the LV honing guide.

Yes, the aim of my mod was to reduce the number of variables and so make setting up easier (your idea will take this a step further). The problem with my earlier mod (as per Rolf - this does not prevent the blade twisting) or a small machinist's square (been there, done that) is that you have more to balance in your hands.

I hate sharpening, but I hate blunt blades even more!

>I have several Ohio Tool bench planes as my users, and some of them and a few of my woodies have blades that taper when viewed from the top (in addition to tapering in thickness). This is also difficult to get to work on shoulder plane blades, like those from a 73 or a LN LA Rabbet or Ohio 140.

You may be able to set up tapered blades quite easily with a matching reverse-tapered shim against the fence.

>It still leaves the problem of rabbet plane blades that are shaped like a "T", and I'd need several different tapered shims for different blades. There is apparently no standard for blade tapers! That jig has a simple elegance that is hard to improve on.

I have some chisels that are not the same thickness side to side. So if I clamp those square to the guide, the edge will not be square, since the guide registers off the front (bevel) side of the blade. Thats why I think the new one is better, since it will register of the back (non bevel) side. Or am I all off one this one?
