>I hadn't flattened the sole yet because I was thinking that I would have to remove the finish from the bottom anyway(if messy)...But, should I flatten the bottom and then finish it leaving the finish on the bottom? Then rub some wax onto the finish on the sole?

>When you say "finish" on the brass, is it the oil you put on or is it lacquered? In any case, I'd oil it up good, then get some solvent and clean off the brass.

>I got a little aggressive with the stationary belt sander so the the front is not as rounded and full as the plane in the linked ad. I got it on clearance for $30 and the Hock blade and 'ingot' weight chip breaker, that were included, were worth that!

>Don't worry about your "excesses" with the shaping. The original looks like it could use some refinement, both in the ergonomics and aesthetics departments. OTOH, it looks like a fun project.
