5 1/2's or Panel Planes

>I am curious to know how many people turn to 5 1/2's or Panel planes when the grain gets gnarly. I know most go for scrapers or scraper planes.
I noticed on David Charlesworth's site he highly recommends the 5 and 5 1/2 as a al round plane. Some people in Aussie land have been trained to ue #6's as all round planes and Aussie's deal with some pretty gnarly woods.
Infill Panel planes are made also to take on difficult grain.
