Plane question

>Just picked up an 8" manufactured coffin plane with the cutter bedding angle at 75-80 degrees. No cutter but still had the original wedge and I had another 2" wide, thick tapered one with chip breaker that fits perfectly. Except it won't work in the traditional way - chatters even on the lightest cut on pine. Was this a toothing plane? I suppose it could be a scraper if one rolled the burr backwards and pushed the plane backwards, but that doesn't seem right. What gives?
