Iron Wood or Ebony ?

Gene D in PA

>I will be adding one of the HNT Gordon Shoulder planes to the arsenal. Material options are; Austrailian Iron Wood and ebony. Other than asthetic preference, are there any pros/cons to either? Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Gene D.

>Either one would work fine Gene - I've got an ironwood jointer and a gidgee block plane.

The ebony is more for looks than anything functional.

Cheers,

Andrew

>I just purchased my first Gordon shoulder plane. I got the ironwood. I was a bit worried that the ironwood might be too coarse, but this is not the case, it is fine-grained. I think it looks great, the color goes with the brass very well. Haven't had much chance to use it yet; it made very nice shavings with a piece of scrap.
