Price and repair of Bedrock 604-1/2 C

>On a lark I stopped by an estate sale this morning and there was a Bedrock 604-1/2 C there. I don't know the type study for Bedrocks, but it had two patent dates (95 and 10 I believe), the straight hole in the levercap, and Bedrock cast into the levercap. Aside from a small chip at the leading edge of the levercap, it's in pretty good shape. . .except, one arm of the adjuster yolk is broken off. I've generally avoided planes that need repair, so I've not got much experience. Question is, is the yoke on the 604-1/2 the same as on non-Bedrock bench planes, and how hard is the repair? Do you just drive the pin out?

Anyone with any idea about fair price (e.g., like a going price on eBay, not the high end retail antique store price)? I checked Ebay and it seems 604s are going for $80-120, but there's not much history for 604-1/2, and nothing but a fishing expedition price for a 604-1/2 C.

Thanks. I doubt very much it'll sell today, but I thought about going back tomorrow to do a little bargaining.

>Buy It. The chip is a non factor. The adjuster yoke is an easy repair. The lack of history shoiuld tell you something about the planes rarity. I would go up to $100 without loosing sleep. And I would fix it and use it without a thought.JR(any less $ for the plane increases gloatability)

I like the #4-1/2 size for smoothing; I just like the weight in my hands better. I would say the #604-1/2 is probably the best cast smoothing plane you will ever find. I had a chance to work with an infill plane a few times, and will be building one of those when I get a chance.

I'm pretty sure the yoke is the exact same part as the reglar bench planes; mine looks identical, but I didn't take it apart to compare. The pin that holds it in is fairly easily driven out with the right size punch and support for the frog. Once you do this a few times you'll get pretty confident and be able to do it easily; the first few times, you'll be afraid of busting the frog. If the plane is actually broken like that, you may be able to talk them down to $50 or less and have a real bargain; if the plane is in good shape otherwise and you have the money, I would spend up to $200 on it. Walter lists the 604-1/2C at $200 to $400, and at one time when I was looking at them they generally went in the $300 range on ebay. Of course I got mine with the cracked cheek for less than $70, from an unreputable dealer.

Yes, the yoke is the same as a regular ol' Stanley.

Is the strange hole kidney shaped? This would be a later made plane.

Bring it home, explain to SWMBO how it was really a good deal. . .(sure honey, if you say so. . .)

Looking forward to tuning it up and putting it to work.
