What are Pad Saws?

>I keep seeing small handels with removable blades described as "pad saws". Can anyone tell me what they're used for and/or how they got the name?

>I don't know how they got their name but they are basically keyhole saws with detachable removeable blades and a hollow handle. You can change blades, also choke up on a blade. They are kind of handy but the blades we got in stock aren't very good so we haven't bothered with them. I suppose with a bandsaw blade you could make a killer saw.

>I always thought they were a bridge between coping saws and hand saws - cutting freeform curves like maybe a bowsaw. Not sure why they called "pad" - maybe the pad of the hand controls it?
