>Here is a picture of a farrier handtool I found in my dad's barn. It is solid brass and is used somehow to determine pitch of show horse shoe pads. Anyone know what it is called??? Any guesses of value???

A Hoof Gauge

Todd Hughes

>have also heard them called a Hoof Protractor. Doesn't really have anything to do with the "pitch of show horse pads" but instead to make sure the angle of the hoof is good and if needed the foot can be corrective trimmed or shod to obtain it. In my experance they are mostly used by beginner Farriers those more experanced ones being able to "eye ball" the hoof. Not real rare , New ones cost between about $10 and $30, don't know when they first came out but i don't think any are real old tools. Vaule? I don't know maybe $25-$35?.....Todd
