Stanley 81?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>A stanley 81 with a broken wing fallowed me home today.I think it is an early model as the top of the blade is cut to look like the top of the lever cap and all of the ones on ebay have a flat top. So what do you all think would be the best way to make this plane work again? 1. Make a new handle out of strap iron and a couple scales to make it comfortable and attach it through the front two holes that hold the rose wood on. or 2 cut the other handle off make a new base with a knob and tote remove the rose wood base and attach it with the screws or 3 use it for a drawer pull for my bench? so what do you all think?

Frankenscraper

David Miller from Iowa

>I'd suggest you cut the other handle off and make a whole new upper assembly from wood kinda like the various #12s. If you can get it tight by screwing from the from two sole holes, great. Or maybe make a whole new sole like a #71 router and use the sole screws to attach it. Or you can get some handlebars from a kid's bike and put on there:)

>I was thinking kinda like a 112 with a tote and knob I'm betting I can get more than I paid for it by selling the rose wood sole. I realy don't need another scraper but when you find a wonded animal with a broken wing you just have to nurse it back to health.

Part of me says...

>"Don't bother". This critter is a "Real Knuckle Dragger". I mean it; the handles are so low that I scraped my knuckles when I tried to use it. I like the frankenscraper idea... Some monkey bars with the handgrips with the big ol' long tassels or maybe raccoon tails.

Good Idea

Todd Hughes

>I would cut the handles off flush with the main body and then using the holes in the bottom mount it to a metal sole/body put on a tote, front knob and you have a wide body 87 Scraper plane,[well sort of]. I did something simular years ago with a no. 70 Box Scraper after taking off the handle.

Don't think the older 81's had a different shaped blade, sounds like a user Mod. to me. Just by chane I picked up a nice 81 yesterday at my every Wed. auction. Also got an about mint 12 1/4 except is missing the handle.was in the bottom of an old wood tool chest and they sold it befor I could get back to pull it out and bid. Lucky for me the old couple that bought,[probably for $5!] the entire lot were slow heads and sold me the plane for $5 after i asked them about it because they didn't know what it was. I sort of thought about doing something like Ernie is talking about but thought better of it since this is a rather vaulable plane and figure sombody could use the body that had a busted one......Todd, ...who looked and looked in that box for that damn handle too

>I saw that plane of yours when I did a search it looks pretty good. the blade may be user made as it has no markings on it. that takes some of my proffets. I can still come out on the sole.

85 blade?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>I think I might have a blade off an 85. would any one have the exact denensions of one. there is a 3/16 notch at the bottom like it would fit in a rabiting plane it is also to narrow for the 81 that and given the shape at the top makes me thinkI have somthing.

>Mine original one has a cutter that is 2 in. wide on the bottom then after it tapers in toward the top it is 1 1/4 in. Dont quite know what you mean when you say it has a 3/16 in. notch in the bottom....Todd

>Sorry the bottom is wider by about 1/2" I took it home at lunch and will have to check the demensions for sure. it is only about 3" long

Ernie, I agree with Todd

Re: Stanley 81 plane

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Here is the busted plane. I definatly think it will be made into somthing with a tote. If I put a beack sole that is log enough for a closed tote and knob like on an infill do you think it would flex to much? or should I use somthing like a soft steel and attach the knob and tote?

Clarify Ernie

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Usually I can fiqure out your mispellings, but this one got me stumped. beack sole. Did you mean "back sole"?

I think that I'd be inclined to put a wooden sole on it, but than again a steel one would add more weight.

I saw a little coffin smoother the other day that had a steel plate screwed to it's sole. No telling when this was done, but it looked like it had been there for quite awhile. Steel plate was about 3" wide, 18" long, and 3/16" thick. I suspect that the fellow who did this just wanted a longer soled plane for a certain task as the plane appeared to be in good shape.

>I`m betting it can`t be done(clarifying Ernie). It`s just one of those situations where you take what you can get.

Even if it could be done,I`m betting things wouldn`t be near as interesting afterward.

Have a rocking good weekend Ernie, you too Todd O.

>That's pretty funny Bob but I don't think it's just Ernie who'd be difficult to clarify. I bet any one one us would make for a full career for any head shrinker to clarify.

I think what we have hear is a clear case of the inmates running the asylum eh? ;~)

Good weekend to you as well Bob
