Disston Backsaw

Matt Malin

>I picked up a Disston backsaw at an antique store.I looked on the "The Disstonian" website and from the stamp on the steel spine of the saw it's pre-Civil War(there is no Disston & Sons just H.Disston on the spine).

I know that just because it's old doesn't mean it's collectible but does anyone have a ballpark figure of it's value? I paid $20.

>It has split nuts(3) I was just going off of the back casting stamp when using the Disstonian website. I will look further in depth for the medallion information. The condition is really good if it's that old. There is some light corrosion on the back and blade but the teeth are perfect. The handle has a small piece at the very to curve that doesn't affect use.

Thanks Ernie on the heads up on some identifiers!

>The spine has the double eagles stamped on it and the medallion is an eagle. The pic below is from the Disstonian site but it shows the eagles really well.

>I don't think it's a user. you might be suprised at the value. worth more than the $20 you spent.

>You don't say how long it is but if it is 10 to 12 in. long I would imagine it would sell on ebay for around $75-$100 maybe a little more. The double eagles add to it's interest and vaule I think.Smaller saw would do more.Condition really affects the price both ways, saw sounds pretty nice.....I really think saws like this are probably one of the best "Investment" tools of today.....Todd
