My Knight jointer just arrived and it is just how expected...fabulous. Unfortunately I am on vacation painting the house. I have a very firm deadline so no real time to test drive. I made a few passes on some cherry when I got it home. The cherry looked up at me and said, "Thank "you!" The plane asked me, "Is that the toughest you've got for me to handle?"

Still, she sometimes notices that I quickly run into the shop before coming in the house and that can pique her interest. So, tonight I think I'll wait until after our little squirt goes to bed and then get them into the shop that way. Honestly, she comes into the shop and is looking straight at me using new tools all the time and never notices - she's even complimented a few of the planes as being "neat". So, I'm in no real danger :)

If you guys really think you are fooling Management you've been smoking some of the funny stuff. Occasionally you might get away with a $10 or $25 purchase, but wives have eyes like hawks and memories like elephants are supposed to have. Sue can quote verbatim from conversations we had 20+ years ago, and as for trying to argue my case....it's never winable. Fortunately we have "the deal" which went into force after we became empty nesters. Under $250 we can spend what we want when we want but over that amount it's up to discussion. Neither of us have ever refused the other, we just discuss it. We describe it as, "I don't ask her what she spends on golf and she doesn't ask me about wood or tools." Now the caveat: I requires self restraint and depends on both knowing what current economic shape you are in. It works for us.

To be fair to her, she would probably be fine with me buying tools. In fact, it would be more adult of me to come clean. The problem is always one of justification; if I told my wife how much my L-N chisels cost, she'd point out the cheap "Footprints" from the Borg everytime we went by them. More likey, she would ask why, with such great tools, my projects all take so long to complete. As to the first, there is no answer that would satisfy a non-tool user (or even a bottom-feeder from this board), and to the second, no answer that would salve my ego :-)

Both are kinda awkward for me. BTW, where is home for you Sean? I'm in Ajax, Ontario and also pass by LV on the way home.

As for the Knight jointer, she knew that was coming so no foul there. The braces, chisels, squares etc...We won't go there.

Dave, the deal you and your better half have sounds really great. My guess is that she spends more on the golf. Besides, at least your tools earn you some money!

When she saw the Sightings picture with the remark about all those tools following someone home, she commented that she could hardly say anything to me about something like that - I'd surely point out a number of things follow her home. In fact, some hand tools have even followed *her* home from time to time. :)

In any case, it's fun to discuss the next purchase with her. And she loves wooden hand planes as much as I do - only she looks at them as decorator items. Since she's a boxaholic, all I have to do is toss her a pretty box from time to time and she's even happier. Of course I do have to check the decor to make sure she hasn't incorporated any of my tools.

I'm located in Ottawa, spiritual home of Lee Valley Tools (bow your head now). It's gotten so bad that some of the counter staff there know me by name. At least it is a healthy activity if you ignore the carcinogenic sawdust, finishing products, and the possiblity of finger loss from stationary power tools :-)

While I was away at a tool show last month my wife commented about the number of packages that had shown up while I was gone. Fortunately the day I came back she left for a bile trip so by the time she returned there was no evidence of anything in site.

As long as a nice piece of furniture gets done now and then my wife is pretty accepting. We did have a conversation the other day where I told her I wanted no more snide comments about my hobby if she wanted me to not make any about her bicycle obsession. Upwards of $3000 in the last couple years. And I could care less. And a few years back as I walked into the house holding a plane in each hand she looked at me and asked, How many of those do you need? (A valid but unanswerable question for fear of self in crimination). I smiled and said you know Honey your right, I'm going to go back to drinking and chasing skirts. That was the end of that.

She does like to open my "Tool Closet" once in a while for company and makes comments as to my little shop of horrors and such but no harm done. And she does like using a vintage Stanley Lignum Vitae mallet I have for tenderizing meat now and then. So she does have some appreciation its just not as deep as mine.

The other day a filemakers hammer I ordered showed up and I found her in a chair in the living room totally perplexed. I'm not sure what she made of that. She did have it balanced on her forehead and asked for help getting it off. Her way of making an offhand joke about my weird obsession.

All in all I'm pretty lucky as she likes that my hobby while expensive at times pays some dividends and keeps me out of trouble.

>You know Joe that is a pretty personal question beings we have only met once. I'm not sure what your intentions are so I'm a bit hesitant to respond. But yes I do have tentative plans to make it east sometime near the month of March next year. I spoke with a friend yesterday and he committed to the idea so I think it could happen. Will the wife raise and eyebrow, probably, has that stopped me before, not yet!
