Second, notice the STANLEY in the lever cap. That is a feature only of Type 13 and later planes. Also, look at the casting in front of the knob. It appears to read "Number 3", but definitely not "Bailey" This would make the casting a Type 15 or later, and it wouldn't have three patent dates on it, either.

>It's not a "rabbet plane" - this is one of the rare Stanley "rabbit" planes, used for adjusting the sizes of rabbits to fit into the cages before shipping. Like the belt plane, a very, very specialized and thus rare tool. Any sensible collector would hop right on it (whiskers trembling).

To answer your question, they're not that expensive.

A #75 should cost you in the vicinity of USD35 or less, the rebate plane (#78) should be about USD50 and the #3 there is a desirable age and in good nick, so it may be worth USD100 to a collector.

Of course, if you're not in a hurry and can wait, things can be found cheaper.

I bought a No. 3 today in about the same condition as the one he has up and paid $15 for it. I really thought long about not buying it too but in the end since pickings were slim at the flea market went ahead and splurged.....Todd

Why Stanley kept producing them while they dropped other tools that actually had some utility is another of the mysteries of life, right up there with why American television producers are unable to distinguish between good and bad shows. They can be used, kind of, but never very well or very comfortably. I hold onto mine to remind me to research before I buy, unless the plane is under $1.

Of course, at that price, maybe I should sell mine too...
