>I found a #5 plane in a bucket of rust.It has a black plastic tote with the logo "B of E" on both sides. There's nothing else remarkable about the plane. It looks like a stanley clone.Anyone ever seen one of these?thanks---Jack

>Yup. It's probably a Stanley made for school woodshops. B of E is Board of Education.

>Roger is absolutely right. When I was in Junior High shop ("manual training" they called it then), we had a wall full of flat top Bedrocks, many of them 5 1/4s, all with the rubberized B of E handle. Obviously to minimize damage when us oafish kids woud drop them on the concrete floor.

After I left town, my Junior High burned down - the shop didn't burn but had significant water damage. My Dad tells the tale of seeing a garbage can full of Bedrocks sitting out on their way to the dump because they had been sprayed with water and the whole shop thing was getting away from planes anyway. Ouch.

>That puts a new light on it. I'll be careful when cleaning it not to alter that handle any.It sounds like a worthy user.---Jack

>And here I was waiting for Alf or Bugbear to tell us that the Bank of England used to give planes as new-account premiums. Oh, but they'd have given infills, wouldn't they?

>Walter's guide lists the value of the 605 1/4 Junior Jack at $400 to $800. Each! Not per trashcan full.
