Need help with Setting a Record Vise.

I'm setting the vise such that the back face will sit inset to the table's front edge with the top of the casting being about an 1" below the table top. Over the table edge, I'll be installing a 4" wide apron across the front of the table that will act as the wooden "cover" to the back face casting.
I've installed a spacer block on the bottom of the table to account for the difference between the aprox 4" vice opening and the 2 1/4" thickness of the table top. I've inverted the table (bottom facing up) to make it easier to install the vise, so I can just lay the vise mounting plate on the bottom of the table while I bolt it to the table.
What I've found is that the geometry of the back face is wedge shaped, and when setting the vise onto the bottom of the table, the back face extends farther into the vise throat then the top and is not parallel to the table edge. I would have assumed that the proper way to mount the vise is with the mounting plate flush to the table bottom, and not shimmed to get the back face parallel to the table edge, but I could be wrong here.
Clear as Mudd?
Thanks
