You might get some different opinions from the hard-core neanderthals, but I haven't met many fellas say that they would die without their combo plane. Still, I wouldn't mind owning/trying to master one. It might make a lot of sense if you're trying to renovate an old house, or if you like to restore antique furniture.

...And take a look at the cutters. i prefer my tools a little "broken in." Shiny metal, still in the plastic sleeve, perhaps the former owner is answering your question.

Scott who's Stanley 45 in orig box was $250.00. Seems like plane prices are down from when I bought mine also.

That's about what I paid for my like new Record 405. One recently sold with a decent assortment of hollow & round bases included for around $300.00 USD (if I remember correctly). Since I bought mine, Record has ceased to exist and so I'm even more happy with my purchase. For $250.00 USD you should hold out for a mint/as new unit. Lesser quality units will go for about $150.00 or so.

It's like any multi-purpose device; most tasks can be better accomplished with stand-alone units. But that's not the point, at least that's not the entire point ;>). It's about you and what you want. No matter what you pay, someone will let you know that they got the very same thing for 1/4 the price you paid. Someone else will tell you you're crazy for even wanting to own the 'thing' in the first place when a $2.00 woodie will make a bead better and faster. Let us know what you decide!

>Hard to see what is included in the picture. Does it have the booklet, cam, beading foot? How many blades? Not a bad price, not a great price. These planes are outstanding if you want to make repro furniture or if you want to repair old stuff. They are very versatile and I think they work better than the more common #45. You will be happier buying a complete plane. Antique planes often have issues and need tuning to work properly. That is hard to do if you are a novice. I started with a brand new Stanley combo and learned much from it. Good luck.

Some people prefer (if only for nostalgic reasons) older models, but the changes are very minor.

The very good condition of the featured plane may be a factor in the high price.

If you want a #405 (or equivalent) for use, Ebay (as other people have noted) does them for a good deal less money, although you'll need to be factor in shipping charges, given your location.
