>So many incomplete 45s get offered on eBay, you could probably find one without a lot of waiting. Go for the one with the fine adjustment on it, not because you can't adjust the fence without it but because it allows you to more easily adjust the fence to parallel with the skates - a very important step. OTOH, the fine-adjustable fence is not quite as firm as the none-adjustable one...you pays your money, you takes your chances.

Don't worry about it. I can't even list the mistakes I've made in my career, whether at work or at home. I've found, too, that the "extra" parts I wind up with when doing my version of what you did never hurt. I recently finished a project in which it was right handy to have two Stanley 45 bodies and sliding sections (the other part with the "skate" or sole on which the iron runs), because I was able to assemble two irons for different parts of the operation - one with a fence and one, with really stubby rods, without. I'm now trying to figure out where to store a slightly larger box to keep the 45 in, so I can keep both bodies conveniently to hand.
