Sitka Spruce for Fiddles

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>I've got a buddy whose Dad is looking for some Sitka Spruce to make some fiddles. Can anybody point me in the right direction to a reputable dealer that would be able to supply the proper quaility Sitka? He wants stuff that is a minimun of 1" thick,6" wide, 16" long, and with 20 grains to the inch.

From what I am told this fellow is a very accomplished fiddle maker. I don't understand why he has no idea where to find this Sitka himself, but I have been asked to help by his son who is my friend and now I am looking to ya' all to help me to help my friend to help his Dad.

We didn't discuss how much his wood budget is, I'm sure once we find a source or two he'll take it from there.

>Hi Todd,

Try these folks at: www.sprucetonewood.com. They seem to have a good selection and good prices.

I have no affiliation with these folks. I'm just thinking about ordering from them myself. I have a clavichord soundboard to replace...

>Hi Todd,

A&M Specialty Woods can help you out. I went for a visit during the October Neander Meander an they quite a selection of woods (including stika) for musical instruments. Heck, they have all kinds of stock worthy of a good drool.

Take care,

>Hi Todd-

I have bought lots of spruce from Bruce at Orcas Island Tonewoods, and he has a good reputation in the luthery community. He is very informative and his prices are not stratospheric like so many others.

Thanks All

>I passed all this onfo on to my buddy, who will pass it along to his Dad. My Friend said that his Dad would be overjoyed with all this info. apparently Dad is not much of a hand at the computer, so finding sources for quaility instrument wood is a bit more difficult for him. Again, thanks for the links, my buddys face really lit up when he saw all the links and I must confess that it made me feel very good to see that as I enjoy helping others if for nothing else than the happiness that it brings.
