Stanely 45 manual

>I just recieved my Stanely 45 but it's been taken apart. Should I splurge and buy a copy from e-bay? Are there any tips in it as to how to sharpen the hollows. Normally I would give a plane the bath and shock it for a while but what will happen to the nickel finish? Boy the slop is getting slippier by the day.

I don't know if you are planning on buying one of the reprint 45, 50 and 55 manuals from eBay... if you are don't!
Buy the reprint right from the source... Lee Valley! They cost $4.95 Canadian... on eBay they are sold for 4 times that amount!
Not much in the way of tips in the manual for sharpening but if you buy the reprint it is a great guide for the combination planes! I bought one and don't regret it at all.

If it is disassembled, and you just need to put it together, sufficient information can be found on Patrick Leach's Stanley Blood and Gore. Note that things like the depth stops can be put in more than one location, depending on the task at hand.
Sharpening

>Find a wooden dowel that matches your round. Slip some #220 silicon carbide paper on it and sharpen away. Maintain your angle and stop frequently to check your progress. The steel is soft and easy to sharpen. Flaten the back and you are ready to go. Good luck.

>Jim, if you're like me, you'll be the one mumbling & shaking your head as you try to use your new #45. Stick with it & you'll eventually get it working. I'd recommend that you get a bunch of soft pine to act as a mediator between you & your #45. It'll definitely let you know if you read the grain incorrectly ;>)!!
Very sharp cutter & light cut will minimize the mumbling & head shaking.

>Frank I had a feeling looking at the cutters and some of the trim in my old house circa 1880 that someone mastered the use of this beast. I really don't hold out any hope of using it on hardwood. Who know's maybe I'll try and make a few new cutters for it out of O1 or A2 should be fun. Thanks Jim
