Dumpster Find

>Garage sales haven't been great in my neighbourhood. Finding lots of young families selling baby goods and clothing.
I did manage to find a nice stash of granite from a dumpster. 2" thick and 3' x 2 was the biggest flat piece I hauled off. Got a couple others just as thick, not as big though.
Now I just have to find the time to tune up some of my jointers!

Just make sure the granite slabs are flat before you use them as a reference for tuning your planes. I pulled several granite cutoffs from a dumpster a year ago and found that most of them were not close to flat. I got one good one out of 5 slabs. I can't see light under my straight edge on it. Others were out up to 0.02" over 2 feet.

>Their is a place just down from my work which works granite and I am always grabbong the scrap pieces out of the back alley. I have yet to find one within a couple thou.
I use them as weights when stickering wood parts and store them under my bench when not in use.

I actually ignored about 20 other pieces... some of them a lot bigger than the piece I got. I checked this one and it checked out to be flat. Shame to see all that other granite go off to granite heaven!

I've got a small polished granite offcut from a memorial masons I use for honing (not back flattening or sole flattening).
It's 1/32" (0.03") dished in 8" !!
BugBear (who has a certified granite surface plate used for plane sole flattening, but not via lapping)
