>I have finished design and construction of a dovetailed steel infill panel plane. The design is avaliable to anybody. Read the full writeup and download plans here.


This sure was a fun project. It took me about 30 hours, using machine tools, but it's probably not a whole lot slower using a hacksaw and files.


I bedded the iron at 45� anticipating some future experimenting with back bevels and different thickness irons to effectively change the blade pitch and mouth tightness. I'll post again when those experiments are further along.

I'm very curious about how you might have originated the curves on the side plates (originate, in the sense of geometrically construct) and how they were cut or milled.

Using CNC, what tolerances did you shoot for and achieve in the fit of the dovetails? Too tight and there'll be troublesome assembly, too loose and rigidity might be a problem. Looks like you got it perfect and I'm just curious what number you decided on.

You mentioned the "...traditional manner pioneered by Stewart Spiers...", which is thought to be hand work with cold chisels, hack saws, files, peening hammers and so forth. I've read the Nigel Lampert book on Spiers and find stunning little on details or methods of construction. There is one very blurry photo of the workshop/factory floor and it is jam packed with weird looking and unidentifiable machines! I'd be very interested in learning about any primary historical sources you (or others) may have come across in your research.

I noticed that the bedding for the blade looked different in Jonathon's picture compared to my A5.

On a side note (I might need to take this offline), I have been meaning to ask you a question about my A5. After using it for a month or so I noticed something peculiar... actually I'll ask you offline.

Anyway, I wish I could come by the store, but I'm far far away.

But most of all I'd love to say thanks for making plans available. I know people need to make a living, but it often seem everyone wants to nickel and dime you for every little thing. It is refreshing to see someone offer plans for free because they want to.

An answer: profiles

I haven't really designed anything, really, just taken historical examples and adapted them. I take catalog drawings and photographs, and using circle templates and rulers, reverse engineer. Sometimes the perspective throws things off, or inaccuracies in the source drawings, but you just eyeball the results and move things around until they look good. I use a computer program, but you could use drafting implements also. Just draw the curves and connect them with tangent lines. (If you download the Vellum files and viewer program, you'll notice Norris and Mathieson profiles lurking in hidden layers in my drawings.) By the way, the tote was far more complicated than the metal side.

Once you have a decent-looking profile, it's easy to draw it by hand or computer full size and proceed. Having everything computerized eased the generation of the CNC programs.

Fine Woodworking published an article about extracting dimensions from (perspective) photographs recently. I just started using an Adobe program called Streamline for converting raster images to line art, but haven't been able to figure out how to request simple curves rather than Bezier splines, which aren't useful for my CNC. At least it gives me a way of importing catalog drawings from Norris etc. into my drafting program.

I aimed for .002 tolerance on the pins and tails, but of course that must be .002 +/- .002 clearance. Tolerance on the profiles can be much wider. I believe that a plane can be dovetailed fine with much sloppier tolerances, especially when using steel on steel, since errors disappear. Perhaps the springback would be greater--I haven't quite figured out the causes of it.

>Spiers certainly had a few grinding machines but should you have the urge you can build an infill with only very basic hand tools. Jim Kingshott's book - making and Modifying woodworking tools (I forget the exact title) tells how. Bill Carter - one of the most amazing planemakers working today only uses hand tools for everything.

Like having the right hand tools for wood having the right ones for metal really speeds things up. Files, metal chisels, scrapers, hacksaws really speed things up. Also in the 19th century files specifically for hand work made things go faster. In the only Spiers plane I have seen apart it is obvious that what wasn't seen was crudely cut out by hand not by machine.

I got a jump on jims plans and made my version of the plane with brass sides, and so that it would accept a 2 in. wide blade that could be swithced out of my 9 in. plane ( for which jim has plans also).

I always thought it was great that he would be willing to provide all this info free, it got the ball rolling for me. Try this for a photo of my panel plane

>I'd lay a bet that good 'ol Spiersy might have had a small brake press or two at the turn of the century. Something to stamp out a few dovetails anyway. That workshop of his was so crowded that it's hard to tell exactly what he did have really?
