Help! Broken saw handle! *LINK*

>Hi. I found a nice looking cross cut saw at a garage sale this weekend. $5.00. It was sharpened and even had a sticker of some saw sharpening shop on it. It had some loose rust and I cleaned that off according to the method on the Vintage Saw site (see link). I had mixed feelinge when the etch on the blade was revealed. It said "Craftsman Model 5074". Oh, well. It seems like a pretty good user. The medalion only said "Patented, Warrented" and had an eagle on it. I wonder if that is typical of old Craftsman saws. If I had been tipped off before hand that it was a Craftsman, I probably would have passed on it.
Unfortunately, when I tried it out, I felt a strange shift in the handle. The handle had a bad horizontal split that was covered up with grime, It is on both sides of the blade. It doesn't come completely apart because the split doesn't go all the way back through the grip, so it's hard to get glue into the crack.
I like this blade. It's in good shape, recently sharpened and has about the right coarsness that I was looking for, 8 teeth per inch. It is nicely tapered in thickness from teeth to top, and as I understand, the best blades are like that. Any suggestions on how best to save the handle? Any suggestions on how best to make a new handle? I'd rather not do that.
