They are modular (stackable, to any height you feel comfortable), with a separate base/foot section and separate top. The idea was to buy new sections as your collection of law books grew. The glass fronts swing out, and then roll back out of the way, above the books. They were mass produced in the early to mid 20th Century, usually from decent quality hardwoods.
