>I saw and then misplaced a magazine reference to a plane sharpening video. I've sharpened a lot of planes and have a good system.What intrigued me about the reference was the author said that there was some great simple procedures for, an example, rounding the edges of the plane blade evening and smoothly and consistently. Plus other ingenous tips. Can anyone help me on the source of the video/ Thanks, John

>In my opinion, the video is worth it. I've used waterstones for 2 or 3 years, have books and videos on sharpening, and there are at least two or three techniques in the video that I had not seen or read. Three come to mind. One is the "ruler trick" for making sure the back of a plane iron is flat (not to be used on chisels though). Second, his technique for slightly rounding the cutting else of the plane iron to avoid tracks. Third, his technique of using light reflection to test the flattness of the back of a plane or chisel blade. Further, he plays a great more emphasis than most on keeping the stones flat. Everyone knows this, but I don't think everyone knows how easily and quickly they can become dished. I learned this the hard way and know take Ron Cusman's advance and have a dedicate 1000g Norton stone that is used to flatten frequently.

Yes, I experienced that quite quickly on the 3rd time I used my Norton combo stones.
I noticed that I was having problems flattening the back of a plane blade. Now I start out as Charlesworth recommends, ie. mark lines on the stone and flatten until they are gone, but I underestimated how quickly a lower grit stone could get dished from a flat state.
Now I check perodically with a small straightedge and flatten when dishing gets noticeable.
