>Found a strange drill today but didn't buy it. it is on an auger bit 8' pole and the bit sticks out 90� to the pole it has a chain drive that runs from the chuck to the other end of the pole you pull the chain to make the bit turn. realy neet looking. it is in a shop owned by an electrician who recently passed away. his son is selling off all his tools.

>Ernie not sure - but I would wager a bet that it was used where present day electricians use a right angle drill. That is to drill through the top plate on the outside walls (from the attic) where the roof is too low to allow a brace & bit. I have ran many wires down walls using a right angle drill - laying on my belly on the rafters - the 8' would allow you a lot more room. Probably better than the tailed tool used today.

>Yep, it's a chain drill Ernie. The pipe is set to drill the holes through the ceiling joists center. Got a taller ceiling get a longer pipe! This is from the knob and tube days and probably drills a 5/8 hole for the tube. Dad said he drilled enough holes to sink a battleship with one of those. Me, I like the Milwaukee apprentice better! If you want to try it out, the idea is to set the pole and then smack the bit into the joist and pull the chain, I'd wear leather gloves.
